Homeschooling the High Schooler-A book review....

I have homeschooled for 8 years now.  Some days I feel very confident as I go about my daily life with 5 children.  But some days, doubts creep in.  I try to use this time to pray and research what I might do to make things better for all of us.

This fall we will begin our first year of high school at home.  Can I do it?  When  I think about it, I must admit that I sometimes become filled with apprehension!

I just finished reading a new book by Paul and Gena Suarez.  It is called Homeschooling the High Schooler-From Transcripts to Graduation.

It is a compilation of lessons from homeshooling parents and high schoolers, all covering topics important to homeschooling high schoolers.

There are many different styles covered, as well as information on what's needed for kids headed to college and for kids headed straight into the working world.

There is much detail given to the importance of credits, transcripts and courses-the technical side of high school.  The spiritual and emotional sides of homeschooling high school are also covered.

Reading the accounts of homeschool life from several different homeschoolers helped me to get an overall feel for high school at home.  There are so many styles of  homeschooling.  This book gave me insight on how things are in other families.

In Chapter 6, the writer made comments about choosing public school for some classes.  The writer justified this decision by saying it was good for the student "to be exposed to the real world" and that the student should "begin experiencing the world outside the sheltered homeschool environment".

I feel that these comments have a very negative connotation towards the homeschool lifestyle and could possibly do more damage than good.  The remainder of the book was very positive.

As a whole, this book has been positively enlightening and very helpful on my quest for knowledge regarding homeschooling my soon to be high schooler!

Jumping on the Blog Wagon!

I decided that it's high time I jump on the blog wagon.  I mean, all my friends are doing it!  So, that means I must put fingers to keys and produce an entry.

And, no, if my friends were all jumping off bridges I would not have to go over the side......not even with bungee cords.

I thought I'd use this space to formally introduce myself.  My name is Lisa and  I have been married for almost 20 years to Tim. We live in West Tennessee and are members of the most awesome, contemporary Baptist Church you have ever seen.

I have given birth to 6 children-one girl and 5 boys.  Our oldest son, born in 1992, went to be with our Lord at nine weeks of age due to complications from heart surgery.  He had HRHS-Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome.

Our oldest, our only daughter, will be 15 next week.  She is studying like crazy for her driver's permit.

We also have an 11 year old, an 8 year old and an almost 5 year old.

Our newest addition is baby Eli.  He is 3 months old and also has HRHS, but that's a whole 'nuther entry!

We've been homeschooling since 1998 and from the looks of things, have many more years to come!    (GOD WILLING!)

Well, I did it!  My first ever blog entry.  Hey.....this could be  very  interesting......
