Spring Burnout???

I think I have spring burnout.  At least that's what it feels like.

I am trying to stay the course but I'm finding much more pleasure in planning for this fall!

After 2 years with ACE, I feel the need for rejuvenation.  Not that there is anything wrong with ACE.....we love ACE and it has been very good for us.  BUT, after praying about it, I feel really pulled towards a simpler method.

I am thinking back to our days of Five In A Row and all of the wonderful things WE learned.  I'm also reading Ruth Beechick's books.  She has such great ideas!  That's the way I want my children to learn to learn.

So, starting this week, we will be slowly phasing in a little Learning Language Arts Through Literature, FIAR and Beautiful Feet History.  We are still going to do our Paces and finish out the year.

My 8th grader is a little different.  She is dyslexic. She has had much success with ACE.  She feels much more comfortable with the firm guidelines.  She knows exactly what needs to be done.  With unit studies, she always seemed to flounder.

So, we hope to continue with ACE for high school with her.

Just posting about this fall makes me feel like I'm catching a spring breeze!   I know....corny, huh.

I think I'll come back and post about how things are going with school since I feel so much better!

Hey! That must be why they call this HOMESCHOOL BLOGGER!

CHD 101

Welcome to CHD 101.

This entry is about living with CHD.  CHD stands for Congenital Heart Disease.

CHD is the #1 birth defect in the United States, affecting one of every 125 babies.

That's about 40,000 babies each year!

Thirty-five different defects have been identified.  Most heart defects can be repaired through surgery.  There are approximately 1.5 million people living with CHD in the United States, yet public awareness is nearly nonexistent.

Even though CHD is the top birth defect and cause of infant death in America, research funding is very low; much lower than grant funding for other common birth defects.

Twenty-five years ago, many babies born with complex CHD were sent home to die.  Medical and surgical advances are being made which allows more and more CHD babies to grow up and lead normal lives.

Personally, our family has been affected by CHD twice.  Our oldest son, Clint and our youngest son, Eli, were both born with HRHS-Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome.

HRHS is a rare, complex heart defect with several different variations, all affecting the right side of the heart.

Clint was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, ASD, VSD, Coarctation of the Aorta and Tricuspid Atresia (missing valve).  His fight only lasted 9 weeks due to complications from surgery, pneumonia and staph infection.

Eli was born with Loop Transposition of the Great Arteries with DORV, ASD, VSD, and Subpulmonary Stenosis.  DORV is double outlet right ventricle.  This defect only affects one out of every 10,000 babies.  DORV has 4 basic variations.  Eli's variation is only seen in 7% of DORV cases.

Eli's surgeon told us that the odds of having two children with complex CHD were comparable to winning the Powerball!  Hmmmmm.......too bad I don't play the lottery!

We are so thankful that God has placed His hand on Eli!  He is so healthy and that will be a huge plus when surgery time comes.

Eli's first open heart surgery is scheduled for May 18.  We have a couple of options with his repair that will be decided once he is in surgery.  Either choice means additional surgery in the future.

If you have made it through this basic CHD tutorial, you are probably wondering what this has to do with homeschooling!

Well, I guess it really doesn't have anything to do with homeschooling....unless you are homeschooling and living with CHD!

We would so appreciate your prayers for Eli and his upcoming surgery in May.  Please pray for his cardiologist, Dr VJ Joshi, and his surgeon, Dr Jeff Myers.  Also pray for the surgical team and nursing staff at LeBonheur CMC.  And our family!

Thanks so much for reading CHD 101!
