Friday Ramblings

I'm so late, but wanted to do a little Friday rambling.

My 9 yr old participated in the AHA/Jump Rope for Heart today.  He came home from school totally psyched about the things he's learned, especially the new rope jumping moves.  I'm glad to hear him get excited about something like this because a) heart health is a big deal in our home, and b) he has a form of Autism called Asperger's Syndrome and really struggles with social interaction.   Parent-teacher conferences are next week and I can't wait to hear how he's been doing lately.  I know for a fact that he is doing much better than he was earlier this school year.  But, I digress.

Back to Jump Rope for Heart.  Thanks mainly to my so NOT IRL friends, my blogging, Facebooking, online homeschooling friends, complete strangers, really, my boy raised a grand total of $250.00 for the American Heart Association.  Because of a mixed message, we cut his fundraising short by three days.  If we had known, he might have raised even more.  As it stands, he came in 3rd place in his school!  If anyone reading this was among the donors, thank you.  Thank you for making a difference.

My CSN Snow Day Giveaway was a great success!  Thanks to all who entered.  I ended up with 75 entries.  75!  This is my biggest giveaway to date!  And I know who the winner is!

But y'all will have to wait until tomorrow to learn who gets to go shopping at CSN Stores

Cruel, huh?

I'm reading a great book called Coming Back Stronger by Drew Brees.  I'm a little surprised at how interested I am in this story.  I have no connection to New Orleans and I'm not one to take an overt interest in sports heroes.  Unless it's a Dallas Cowboy...   I'm truly enjoying the story and will be reviewing this book here soon.

Waiting in the wings is a book on potty training children with Autism, another on saving money on groceries, and a book by a player back in the days of the civil rights movement.

I'll cut my ramblings short for now since it's getting late.  I'll leave you with a photo that pretty much sums up this lazy, laid back Friday night.....

Looking Outside my Window....

I see something different.  Something that replaces the gloom and darkness that winter often brings.  I see.....

Not this......

It's still cold, of course.  I mean, it is winter.  But it just looks....  happy.

I have to be honest.  I'm not getting a whole lot done today because of it.  It's shining in through my windows.

It's distracting!

My to-do list has nary a check mark.  And it's a long to-do list:

  • Blog posts
  • Freelance work
  • Guest blog post
  • Strong Woman, Surrendered Heart (something new from a dear friend that I hope to share with you)
  • Housework--neverending...
  • Decluttering
  • Home decor projects (bench cushions, dresser re-do, artwork)
  • Plus, plus, plus!
I think I should.....do something.

Like, vacuum up the dust I see in this blinding sunlight.

By the way.... my CSN giveaway ends tomorrow night.  Have you entered yet??

Have any of you been hit with the January blues?  Has it been snowing for days in your backyard?  Maybe your credit card bills are weighing heavily on your mind.  Or, you didn’t get everything on your wish list during the holidays…

Maybe you received a new computer, but no one thought to gift you the nice laptop messenger bag you really needed wanted.  Perhaps all of your gifts were practical (read…BOR-ING) and impersonal.   Because our significant others and children really try, but often miss the mark.

What if I told you that my friends at CSN Stores would like to help me lift your spirits with a little Mad Money?

Now that I have your attention…

2011 Word of the Year...FAMILY

My word for 2011 is FAMILY.

What does this mean?  Well, I want to spend the year being intentional in the care of my family.  I guess you could say that I strive to be a Proverbs 31 woman.  What does THAT mean?

Proverbs 31:10-31 is a summary of what it means to be a wife of noble character, who in turn, takes excellent care of her family:

10 A wife of noble character who can find?
   She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
   and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
   all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
   and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
   bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
   she provides food for her family
   and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
   out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
   her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
   and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
   and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
   and extends her hands to the needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
   for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
   she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
   where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
   and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
   she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
   and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
   and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
   her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
   but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
   but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
   and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Let's take a look at this more closely.  Basically, I want to be:

10)morally strong and valuable
11)a trustworthy steward
12) a consistent blessing
13, 14) a seeker of the best who works diligently to provide for the family
15) an early riser who fights off laziness and idleness to guarantee a good start for her family
16) purposeful in my pursuit to support my husband in providing for our family
17) physically strong and able
18) able to reap the rewards of my diligence, using my time wisely (both day and night)
19) engaged in constructive activities
20) a discerning friend to the poor
21) prepared to meet the needs of my family in all seasons of life
22) clothed in good taste (inner and outer beauty)
23) a contributor to my husband's success
24)  industrious
25) covered by the strength and honor of the Lord with confidence in the future
26) careful and kind with my words
27) keeping active watch over my household
28, 29) accepting of praise from my family
30) mindful of emphasis on outer beauty, allowing focus on inner beauty.

So, what will this look like in my daily life?
  • Daily quiet time to focus on biblical knowledge and application so I can be a Godly woman and so I can pass it down to my family-both the knowledge and the application.
  • Finding ways to save money while providing the things we need, and sometimes, the things we want.
  • Finding opportunities each day to make things a little better-working my home business to earn money, decluttering my home, menu planning, record keeping, paper organization,supporting schooling, household chores.
  • Making changes to become more healthy with diet and exercise.
  • Working on using my time wisely. (Stop wasting so much time on FB!)
  • Pursuing art projects and home improvement projects-things that bring me happiness, beautify our home without costing a lot of money.
  • Volunteering to help those less fortunate and encouraging my family to stand with me
  • Supporting my husband in every way possible
  • Knowing when to speak and when to hold my tongue.
  • Being involved in my children's pursuits so I can make adjustments and corrections when necessary.
  • Taking care of all that I've been given-spiritually, physically, emotionally.
That's a pretty tall order, wouldn't you say?  Impossible even.  It's a guideline, a goal, my goal, to become more purposeful, intentional, and consistent in the care and keeping of my family.  I hope to raise the bar this year.  I have a lot of work to do!

2011 is the year I focus on my family by becoming the best possible Lisa I can be.

This is the verse (or verses) I've chosen for us this year with emphasis on verses 2-3:

Psalm 126
A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.
1When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem,
it was like a dream!
2We were filled with laughter,
and we sang for joy.
And the other nations said,
“What amazing things the Lord has done for them.”
3Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us!
What joy!
4Restore our fortunes, Lord,
as streams renew the desert.
5Those who plant in tears
will harvest with shouts of joy.
6They weep as they go to plant their seed,
but they sing as they return with the harvest.

Tyndale Book Review-The Boy who Came Back from Heaven

I just read an amazing book.  It's called The Boy who Came Back from Heaven by Kevin and Alex Malarkey.  This remarkable story of life, death, and the spiritual world that surrounds us all is eye opening and reassuring, to say the least.

In 2004 kevin and Alex Malarkey were in a horrific car accident.  The accident caused critical injuries and left 6 yr old Alex in a coma for seven weeks.  As thousands of people prayed, Alex journeyed to Heaven, eventually coming back to earth to tell about his experiences.  Once you read Alex's story, you can't help but believe this young boy's story.  You will see heaven, the spiritual world, and most importantly, Jesus, in a whole new light.

In this book, Alex shares the story of his visit to Heaven with remarkable details he could never know without experiencing it for himself. He recounted EMT conversations and happenings at the scene of the accident and during his hospital stay while he was in a coma. A story of true faith and miracles, The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven will make you hunger for what comes after this life.

I really enjoyed reading this story and especially enjoyed the section of photos in the center of the book.

Would you like to read the first chapter?  Here's a link to a sample provided by Tyndale Publishing.

The Truth Project

My friend Sheri participates in a linky/series called  The Truth Project.  I thought her latest topic was a good one so I'm gonna join in.  I know I'm not following the rules, but you can go to Sheri's post and find all that info if you are interested.

This week's topic (via Sheri) is:
Prompt: Something people think about you, but they are wrong...

I have great difficulty with socialization.  I'm sure most people think I'm a homebody, some may even think I'm not allowed to get out and about.  (lol)  Others may think I'm aloof or even snooty or just downright unfriendly.

Nothing could be further from the truth.   I like to be at home-that's true.  I'm most comfortable at home.  I choose to be at home.  I can come and go (with planning due to my many children).  I really can.  I just usually choose not to.  I find one on one conversations and eye contact difficult. I can do it, but it's much easier for me to write emails and text messages.  (Hmmm....Perhaps this explains all the Autism....)
I do not like the phone.  I tend to be shy, but can be outgoing around those who know me well.

So....  most people think I'm isolated and unfriendly, but the truth is I cherish my friendships.  I hope my friends know this.  I may not initiate contact via phone or in person, but I hold my friendships close to my heart and wish I was more comfortable in my own skin, more comfortable with the thought of stepping out of my box and looking people in the eye.

It Has Arrived......

...And it is

Well, it's official.  We are definitely sitting on ready.  No longer just 'watching'.....we've been WARNED.

So exciting!!  I can be excited because I don't have to worry about travel, work, etc.  I can just bundle my kids, send them out, bring them in, (in and out, in and out) undress them, mop water, throw gloves in the dryer, wash towels.....wait

Let me stop there and just focus on the snow.  Don't want to fill myself with dread.  The truth is, I'd be washing those towels anyway and I'd probably be mopping up water (or tea)-I do that on a daily basis.

I really do love seeing the snow.  I love the excitement and anticipation as the kids wait and watch.  Especially when the snow has real potential, like this one.  We are in the 2-4 inches range which is a lot of snow for us.  The grocery stores are packed, I can promise you that.  The weather man even suggested thunder snow.

 Doesn't that sound ominous?  Sort of super hero-like, or maybe a professional wrestler.....

It sounds serious.

We will see.  And so will you--I'll be sure to post photos tomorrow.
